Onondaga Creekwalk, Syracuse

Onondaga Creekwalk, Syracuse

The Onondaga Creekwalk is a 4.8-mile multi-use trail that winds through the heart of Syracuse, offering cyclists, skaters, and pedestrians a scenic and accessible route that closely follows the path of Onondaga Creek. Designed over more than three decades of planning and phased construction since 1988, the trail connects Kirk Park on the city’s South Side to the shores of Onondaga Lake, making its way through downtown landmarks such as historic Armory Square.

Though much of the route keeps the creek in view, some segments veer onto existing sidewalks or streets due to structural or geographic constraints. Still, the Creekwalk remains largely off-road and paved, with a mix of modern design and urban integration. Several crossings require attention from users, but overall, the path offers a comfortable and immersive way to explore the city’s cultural and natural features.

The northern stretch of the trail merges with the Erie Canalway and Empire State Trails at Onondaga Lake, passing through the revitalized Inner Harbor and Franklin Square. As the trail continues south toward downtown, it invites visitors to explore the area's vibrant restaurants, boutiques, and cultural venues before rejoining the creek near South West Street and continuing to Kirk Park.

With a total distance that can extend to 6.1 miles when including nearby streets and parkways, the Onondaga Creekwalk offers more than just a route-it’s a moving experience through the evolving landscape of Syracuse, blending urban energy with pockets of natural calm.
