Palace of Erdody, Bratislava

The Erdödy Palace was built around 1770 for Count Juraj Erdödy, a high-ranking Hungarian judge, according to a design by architect Matej Walch. The Rococo palace was constructed on the site of three older houses and is distinguished by the rich stucco ornamentation of its façade.

The palace also played an important role in Bratislava’s musical life. Juraj Erdödy’s son, Ján Erdödy, maintained a private opera company here from 1785 to 1788. Its ensemble presented dozens of productions and was regarded as one of the most important theatrical ventures in Hungary at the time.

Over the years, the palace served various purposes, including as the residence of Hungarian nobles, a venue for concerts, and a government facility. Architecturally, it is a fine example of the Rococo style, known for its elaborate decoration, elegant proportions, and ornamental details.

Today, the historic building has been adapted for modern use and houses a number of cafés, restaurants, shops, and boutiques. Its richly decorated façade and spacious courtyard make it an interesting example of Bratislava’s aristocratic architecture and a reminder of the city’s importance during the 18th and 19th centuries.
