Palacio de Benicarlo (Benicarlo Palace), Valencia
Located in San Lorenzo Square, the Benicarlo Palace (Palacio de Benicarlo), also known as the Palace of the Government of the Province of Valencia, stands as a testament to architectural grandeur. Its construction began in 1482 under the renowned architect Pere Conte, who envisioned and executed this remarkable project.
By 1510, the central section of the building had been completed, while the towers took shape by 1585. Thus, spanning over a century, the palace emerged during a period marked by the flourishing styles of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Predominantly showcasing the late Gothic style, the palace was brought to life by a multitude of skilled craftsmen specializing in various fields such as bricklaying, carpentry, painting, furniture making, and more. Passing through a small courtyard, one enters the interior of the palace, greeted by halls adorned with lavishly painted walls, intricately designed coffered ceilings, and elegantly tiled floors.
Throughout its existence, this palace has witnessed a rich and diverse history, changing hands among influential families. In 1485, it came under the ownership of the Borgia family. In the mid-18th century, having fallen into complete disrepair, it transitioned to the possession of the Dukes of Gandia. Later, it found itself in the care of the Benavente family and subsequently the Osuna family. During the Spanish Civil War, it served as the seat of the government of the Second Spanish Republic. Today, the Palacio de Benicarlo proudly serves as the Parliament of Valencia.
