Palazzo Orsetti (Orsetti Palace), Lucca
Orsetti Palace, also known as Palazzo Diodati Orsetti, is a striking historical landmark in Lucca. Built by the Diodati family in the 16th century on the foundations of a medieval structure, the palace today serves as one of the locations of the municipal government, housing the offices of the mayor and the city council.
The palace stands out for its elaborate interiors, adorned with golden accents on its doors, and beautifully decorated rooms that reflect centuries of artistic refinement. The entrance boasts two grand sandstone portals, one adorned with a relief and the other with a mermaid. A central corridor leads to a striking staircase, the building's architectural gem. From the Via Santa Giustina courtyard, a side entrance grants access to a notable "Santa Cecilia" painting by Onofrio Avellino.
Surrounding the palace is a serene garden enclosed by high walls. This space, adorned with lush trees and centered around a well, offers a peaceful retreat from the city's bustle.
The palace's ground floor features elegant 19th-century wall paintings, but the first floor showcases true opulence. The Mirrors Room, once a ballroom, now hosts municipal meetings with its Empire-style furniture. The Music Room, adorned with red curtains and an 18th-century chandelier, boasts exceptional acoustics. The Green Room, once a living area, now serves for civil weddings, its walls draped in green brocade.
The main floor showcases neoclassical decor, including a room with a 17th-century painting of the Republic of Lucca and its motto. The top floor features corridor-lit rooms, with the north wing preserving 16th-century wooden beam ceilings. Orsetti Palace, both an architectural gem and cultural hub, hosts exhibitions and events, offering visitors a glimpse into Lucca’s rich heritage.
