Church of San Salvatore, Lucca
The Church of San Salvatore in Mustolio is a Romanesque-style Catholic church situated in the heart of Lucca. Its history dates back to at least the 8th century, as mentioned in a codex from the Capitular Library of Lucca, and it was documented as a place of worship in the early 11th century. The present structure, however, primarily reflects a 12th-century reconstruction, with later modifications, including 19th-century refurbishments.
One of the church’s unique structural aspects is its foundation-the lower two meters of the building are constructed from stones repurposed from Lucca’s medieval walls. The façade is adorned with notable 12th-century reliefs on its architraves, one depicting a Eucharistic meal and another illustrating a miracle of San Nicolao Prete, attributed to the sculptor Biduino. A small gable bell tower rises above the façade, and a stained-glass lunette featuring a traditional depiction of Christ decorates the central portal.
Internally, the church follows a single-hall plan with a slightly protruding apse. The ceiling structure comprises wooden trusses, beams, joists, and mizzens. The presbytery is elevated by two steps, featuring a marble high altar, while the apsidal basin is enriched with gold-painted decoration.
The church has housed several important artworks, including Paolo Zacchia il Vecchio’s Ascension of Christ and Bonuccio Trénta’s Assumption of Mary, transferred from the former Church of San Pietro Maggiore. Additionally, paintings such as Saint Jerome by Alessandro Ardente and Saints Zita and Paolino by Gaspare Mannucci have adorned its interior.
The Church of San Salvatore stands as a testament to this enduring heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into Lucca’s medieval past and its architectural continuity over the centuries.

Lucca's City Wall and Gates
As one of Italy's Città d'arte's (arts towns), Lucca is famous, among other things, for its well-preserved ancient walls encircling the historic center. From about 570 AD until 1847 the city had been the center of the Longobard administration and the capital of old Tuscany, and as such required a defense system to render it an impenetrable fortress.
