Parque Morelos (Morelos Park), Tijuana
Parque Morelos is the largest urban park in the area, opened in 1987 as a broad public space for recreation, family outings, and contact with nature. It is named after José María Morelos, the priest and military leader who became one of the central figures of the Mexican War of Independence. Although the park was created by the state government, its management later passed to the municipality in 1998, and it is now operated through SIMPATT, the municipal system responsible for thematic parks.
The park’s main feature is a large artificial lake of about four hectares, bordered by green areas and walking paths where ducks and other birds are often seen. The lake is also stocked with fish such as bass, carp, and catfish. Around it, visitors find lawns, shaded picnic areas, children’s playgrounds, kiosks, food stalls, paddle boats, a small train, and performance spaces, including an open-air theatre and an audiorama designed for quiet listening in a natural setting.
Another important section is its wildlife area, officially recognized as an Environmental Management Unit, or UMA. Rather than functioning only as a display zoo, this area cares for animals rescued from illegal trafficking, private homes, or circuses. It also includes a tree nursery, a desert garden with cacti and nopales, paintball areas, and nearby access to El Trompo Interactive Museum.
