Parque Teniente Guerrero (Lieutenant Guerrero Park), Tijuana
Parque Teniente Guerrero is one of the city’s oldest public parks, created in 1924 and shaped by civic memory from the start. Its land was donated for public use by the family of Benigno Pérez, and its name honours Lieutenant Miguel Guerrero, who defended the area during the 1911 filibuster conflict. Since the city lacked a traditional Plaza Mayor, the park gradually became its unofficial central square.
The park has the character of a traditional civic gathering place, with shaded paths, mature trees, benches, small ponds, a fountain, and a central kiosk used for community events. Visitors will also notice a bust of Benito Juárez, a monumental clock, and the Ignacio Zaragoza Library, all adding to its role as more than a simple green space. The city’s official founding anniversary is also marked here each July, reinforcing its place in public life.
For tourists, the park offers a direct view of everyday local culture. Its concrete outdoor chess tables are a well-known feature, drawing regular players and onlookers to matches that can feel as serious as public theatre. The white-painted lower trunks of the trees reflect a common Mexican landscaping practice, while traditional shoe-shiners, known as boleros, add another layer of street-level activity.
