Museo de Historia de Tijuana (Tijuana History Museum), Tijuana (must see)

The Museo de Historia de Tijuana presents the city’s past through a compact, accessible exhibition inside the former Municipal Palace, one of the area’s older civic buildings, dating to 1921. The museum opened in 2010 and focuses on local memory, identity, and urban change. The building itself reflects part of that history. Its original construction was funded in part through tax revenue collected from nightlife businesses, casinos, and bars operating during the years of U.S. Prohibition, when cross-border entertainment helped fuel local growth.

Its permanent rooms cover natural history, social and political life, urban growth, culture, and economic development. Together, they trace its growth from border settlement to major urban centre shaped by migration, trade, tourism, and cross-border exchange. One section also covers the 1925–1929 period when it was officially renamed “Zaragoza” before local resistance restored the name Tijuana.

Visitors will find photographs, documents, maps, objects, and interpretive displays explaining how geography and history shaped local life. The exhibits include archaeological material connected to the Kumeyaay people, showing that the region was inhabited long before the modern border existed. Other displays feature memorabilia from early radio broadcasting, vintage typewriters, and communication equipment used by some of the area’s first municipal clerks during the 1920s.

The museum is part of a wider cultural complex with temporary exhibitions, educational spaces, and access to the local historical archive. The former Municipal Palace served as City Hall until 1986 before becoming a cultural centre. Admission is free, and bilingual displays make the museum easy to visit for local and cross-border travellers.
