Mercado El Popo (El Popo Market), Tijuana

Mercado El Popo (El Popo Market), Tijuana

Mercado El Popo is one of the older operating commercial hubs in the city, with roots usually traced to the 1930s. Its layout helps explain its atmosphere: it functions as a pasaje, or covered commercial passage, linking two busy downtown corridors through compact stalls and narrow aisles. Rather than feeling like a modern souvenir complex, it preserves the rhythm of an older market, where practical shopping, food traditions, and small-scale family trade share the same space.

Food is one of its strongest points. The market is known for regional cheeses, including fresh queso fresco and firmer varieties such as queso cotija enchilado, coated with chili paste. Stalls also sell dried chilies, spices, herbs, traditional sweets, natural honey, quail eggs, and sometimes sun-dried salted fish from independent vendors. Candy stands add colour with glorias, walnut mazapán, candied squash, and coconut pieces often offered for tasting.

The stalls also carry objects tied to everyday Mexican kitchens, household use, and spiritual practice. Wooden tortilla presses, volcanic-stone molcajetes, pottery, loofah sponges, candles, oils, herbs, religious images, and ritual objects are sold side by side. Botánica stalls may show figures such as Santa Muerte or San Simón with small offerings. For tourists, Mercado El Popo is a compact stop that combines food, household goods, and local spiritual traditions.
