San Francisco De Asis Temple, Tijuana

San Francisco De Asis Temple, Tijuana

San Francisco de Asis Temple is a Catholic church served by the Franciscan community and dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. Built in the 1960s, it also serves as the Casa Madre, or Mother House, of the Franciscan Province of Blessed Fray Junípero Serra, giving it both administrative and spiritual importance for the order across northwestern Mexico.

The building combines Romanesque-inspired forms with Gothic-style windows and a central dome. Its façade is faced with pink quarry stone from Yahualica de González Gallo, Jalisco, a region known for generations of artisans who carve this volcanic stone by hand. This detail connects the church to a wider Mexican craft tradition, not only to local religious life.

Inside, visitors will find a marble altar, devotional images of the Virgin Mary and Saint Francis, and a copy of the San Damiano Crucifix, closely linked with Franciscan spirituality. The temple remains an active place of worship and a community centre, hosting daily Masses, the annual Kermés de San Francisco, sacred music concerts, and occasional classical performances. Together with the nearby park, it also helps preserve a quieter, family-oriented atmosphere amid the surrounding commercial activity.
