Parroquia Nuestra Senora De La Dolorosa, San Jose

Parroquia Nuestra Senora De La Dolorosa, San Jose

The Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows (La Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores), founded in 1909, is a well-known church in San José. This beautiful church is situated south of the Metropolitan Cathedral and is known for its historical significance, impressive architecture, and religious importance.

The church owes its name and patron saint to a Guatemalan image, which is currently housed inside the temple. Interestingly, this image belonged to a private oratory that was located in the same place where the church stands today. The church underwent a major remodeling of its facade in the 1940s, during which its two towers were removed, and a single tower was placed in the center.

The Servant of God, María Isabel Acuña Arias, attended Mass and received her First Communion at this church before moving to Heredia. This historical connection to a figure of such spiritual significance adds to the church's allure and reputation as a place of worship.

Currently, The Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows is attended by the Dominican Fathers of the Order of Preachers. It has a subsidiary chapel, the Our Lady of the Angels chapel, and has served as the chaplain at the Carlos María Ulloa Home for the Elderly since 2018.

The Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows is well-known for its broadcasts of the Holy Mass and Rosary on radio. Through this medium, the church has become accessible to a wider audience, extending its reach and impact beyond its physical walls.
