Penang Baptist Church, George Town

Penang Baptist Church, George Town

The history of this church traces back to the post-Second World War era. In 1953, Reverend Greene Strother and his wife Martha were sent by the Southern Baptist Convention in the United States on an evangelical mission to Malaya. Initially, Sunday services were conducted in a private residence until the church acquired a bungalow at 35 Anson Road. This bungalow served as the church, theological seminary, and the residence of the Strothers.

In December 1954, Martha Strother initiated the English Youth Fellowship, catering to the English-educated community; it gradually evolved into an English-language worship service, eventually becoming known as the Georgetown Baptist Church.

In 1957, the church purchased a property at 224 Macalister Road for RM80,000, with US$15,000 provided as a gift offering from the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Services continued at 35 Anson Road until 1967, when the property was sold, prompting the church's relocation to 224 Macalister Road. At that time, Macalister Road was considered an affluent residential area.

In 1977, following a change in zoning by the government, the bungalow became eligible for use as a church. After undergoing renovation, the Penang Baptist Church officially opened its doors on 1 January 1978. The elegant colonial building is particularly distinguished by its beautiful stained glass front window.
