Wawasan Open University, George Town

Wawasan Open University’s main campus occupies an extensive seafront site on Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, formerly Northam Road, an area once lined with grand private residences. Established in 2006, WOU is a private institution specialising in flexible and distance learning. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in business, education, information technology, humanities, and the social sciences. The university received a Tier 4, or “Very Good,” rating in Malaysia’s SETARA university assessments in both 2011 and 2013.

The campus comprises two contrasting buildings: the historic Homestead mansion and the contemporary 12-storey Al-Bukhary Building. Completed in 1919, Homestead's elegant Palladian-style façade features classical columns, pediments, balconies, and two square towers, reflecting the colonial character of Penang’s former coastal mansions.

Homestead became associated with businessman and philanthropist Yeap Chor Ee, who purchased the estate in the early 1930s and whose descendants later donated the property for university use. A prominent golden-coloured statue honouring him stands near the entrance. According to local folklore, the property was used partly to obstruct the sea view from the residence of a business rival across the road.

Behind Homestead, the blue-glass Al-Bukhary Building creates a marked contrast between early-20th-century architecture and modern campus design. As the grounds belong to an active university, interior access may be limited, but visitors can still appreciate the mansion, statue, and landscaped coastal setting from outside.
