Pete’s Tavern, New York

Established inside an 1829 building, Pete’s Tavern is often recognized as New York City’s oldest continuously operating restaurant and bar. The tavern has witnessed nearly two centuries of city life, evolving from an early “grocery and grog” shop into a long-standing neighborhood institution. During Prohibition, when alcohol sales were banned, the establishment famously survived by disguising itself as a flower shop, allowing business to continue behind closed doors.

The tavern’s history is closely tied to New York’s literary and cultural past. Writer O. Henry lived nearby in the early 1900s, and local lore suggests he spent time at the bar while writing stories inspired by the neighborhood’s atmosphere. Purchased by Peter D’Belles in 1926, the establishment adopted the name Pete’s Tavern, which has remained ever since. Its dark wood interiors, tin ceilings, and old-fashioned booths preserve the feel of a classic Manhattan saloon, offering visitors a glimpse into a different era of city dining.

Beyond its historic reputation, Pete’s Tavern has also become familiar through film and television appearances, serving as a backdrop for productions ranging from the TV show Seinfeld to Sex and the City and Blue Bloods. Today, the tavern continues to attract both locals and visitors with classic pub fare, a lively atmosphere, and a setting that reflects generations of New York history.
