Piazza della Repubblica (Republic Square), Florence

Republic Square is one of Florence’s liveliest central squares, where the city’s ancient past meets the elegant atmosphere of a modern European city. Surrounded by historic cafés, grand buildings, and bustling shopping streets, it is a popular spot to pause for a coffee, listen to street musicians, or simply observe the rhythm of Florentine life.

The square stands on the site of the city’s ancient Roman forum, which once formed the heart of Florence. In the Middle Ages, the area became a busy marketplace, filled with shops, stalls, and narrow streets. For centuries, it remained one of Florence’s most crowded districts, home to bustling markets and the city’s old Jewish quarter. Its appearance changed dramatically in the late 19th century, when Florence underwent extensive redevelopment after briefly serving as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1865 to 1871. Many medieval buildings were demolished to create the spacious square seen today.

At the center of Republic Square stands the Column of Abundance, marking the intersection of the ancient Roman city’s main streets. The column dates back to the 15th century, although its current statue is a modern replacement. The square is also recognizable by its monumental triumphal arch, which bears an inscription, roughly translated as “The ancient center of the city, restored to new life after centuries of neglect.” The inscription reflects the ambitious urban renewal that reshaped this part of Florence.

Today, Republic Square is known for its historic cafés, including Caffè Gilli, Caffè Paszkowski, and Giubbe Rosse, which have long been associated with the city’s literary and artistic circles. Take a seat beneath the arcades, admire the architecture, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Although much of the square’s medieval character has disappeared, it remains a natural meeting point-and a place where layers of Florentine history converge.
