Pinkus Müller Brewery and Restaurant, Munster

Pinkus Müller Brewery and Restaurant, Munster

Pinkus Muller is a true Munster landmark: a family-owned brewery and restaurant tracing its roots back to 1816. Founded by Johannes Muller and his wife Friederika, it began as a bakery and small brewing operation that gradually evolved into Munster’s sole surviving brewery, out of the 150 once operating in the city. Today, fifth- and sixth-generation family members continue the tradition, offering visitors a glimpse into more than two centuries of Westphalian brewing heritage.

What sets Pinkus Muller apart is its longstanding commitment to organic production. Since joining Bioland in the 1970s, the brewery has been brewing exclusively with organically-sourced barley and hops since the late 1980s-the first modern-era brewery in Germany to do so. Their signature Munster-style altbier, served on tap at the brewery restaurant, blends fresh pale ale with aged beer inoculated with lactic bacteria to produce a unique tartness-a regional alternative to Dusseldorf altbier.

The on-site “Altbierkuche” welcomes guests into a warm, wood-paneled interior with multiple cozy dining rooms, including a traditional Westphalian oven framed by blue‑and‑white Delft‑style tiles. Here, guests can enjoy hearty Westphalian cuisine such as schnitzel, landbratwurst, regional cheeses, and hearty meat dishes, complemented by desserts like Altbier-infused fruit sorbets or beer‑steeped waffles.

Conveniently located near Munster’s historical Old Town, just off Rosenplatz and close to the Observant Church (Observantenkirche), Pinkus Muller enjoys a central setting ideal for a midday break or an evening meal. With very reasonable prices, friendly multi‑generation hospitality, and its rich local atmosphere, it consistently earns top ratings from visitors, many calling it a must‑visit destination in Munster.
