Placa de l'Angel (Angel's Square), Barcelona

Once known as the Plaça del Blat, or the "Wheat Square", this area was where the city's grain was brought for trading. Originally located outside the old city walls, the square witnessed a remarkable event in the 9th century. During a ceremonial procession of Saint Eulàlia's relics to the cathedral, the body inexplicably halted when it reached the square. A heavenly apparition appeared, accusingly pointing at an official who then confessed to stealing the saint's toe. Upon its return, Eulàlia's remains allowed themselves to be transported to their final destination. A monument honoring the angelic accuser was erected here in 1616 but was later removed by the anti-clerical city government in 1823. Today, the angel's statue can be found in a niche on the façade of a building in the square.

The streets surrounding Plaça de l'Àngel boast the best-preserved Roman walls and towers of Barcino, some towering up to 46 feet high. These ancient structures beautifully intermingle with medieval buildings, particularly along Carrer del Sots-Tinent Navarro. Remarkably, one tower was only discovered as recently as 1968. Additional remnants of the Roman walls can be found further up Vía Laietana in the Plaça de Ramón Berenguer III el Gran. From there, one can gaze upon Josep Llimona's equestrian statue of the count who united Barcelona with Aragón in 1137, elevating the city to the capital of a kingdom.
