In anticipation of the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona's neglected industrial seafront and port underwent a remarkable transformation, becoming one of Europe's most captivating waterfront areas.
The entire region underwent a comprehensive rejuvenation, featuring the construction of a new marina and apartment buildings to accommodate the athletes. The previously existing railway tracks along the coast were removed, making way for parks and a promenade. To enhance the allure of the coastline, hundreds of tons of sand were imported from Egypt, creating four kilometers of pristine sandy beaches.
Adorning the new promenade are a collection of sculptures by renowned international artists such as Frank Gehry, Roy Lichtenstein, and Javier Mariscal. Among them, the most enigmatic is "A Room Where it Always Rains" by Spanish artist Juan Muñoz, situated in Plaça del Mar. As a result of technical issues, the water system of the sculpture never functioned properly, earning it the nickname "A Room Where It Never Rained".
