Planetarium der Stadt Wien, Vienna
The Zeiss Planetarium, which is named after the renowned Austrian lens maker, holds the distinction of being Austria's very first structure of its kind. In its early days, the entire building was constructed primarily from wood. However, in 1928, it was relocated to the Prater area and underwent a significant redesign. During World War II, the building suffered damage, but the custodians had the foresight to relocate the major equipment in advance.
Following the war, a new facility was erected in the Kaisergarten. Over time, various enhancements were introduced, including the installation of a state-of-the-art Mark IX laser projector known as ZUPLIP. This institution also collaborates closely with the Urania Observatory in terms of development and planning.
The dome of the structure boasts a massive 20-meter-diameter lens. The observation deck can accommodate approximately 200 visitors simultaneously, making it a highly sought-after destination for stargazing enthusiasts.
The Vienna Planetarium features the most cutting-edge star projector in the world. This projector renders the starry sky with astonishing realism during its various "astro shows." Furthermore, it showcases stars, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae in their authentic colors, sometimes with a captivating sparkle.
The planetarium presents over 9,000 celestial objects, many of which are not visible to the naked eye, in a mysterious and captivating display. Additionally, a unique laser image projector delivers stunning astronomical images, films, and computer animations in vivid and brilliant colors.
