Platform Tavern, Southampton

The Platform Tavern is a classic British pub, full of history, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a menu of hearty, traditional food. The building stands right against Southampton's medieval city walls, which date back to around 1350. In those days, this part of the waterfront was home to a gun battery, protecting the busy port.

The Platform Tavern has been in place since 1873, serving generations of sailors, dockworkers, and travellers. Like many pubs near the docks, it once brewed its own ale and even offered rooms upstairs for seamen looking for a place to stay.

When the Titanic was preparing for its maiden voyage in April 1912, the pub would have had a front-row view of the activity around the docks. One of its most notable guests was James McGrady, a Titanic crew member whose last known address was the Platform Tavern. Tragically, he lost his life in the disaster and became the last victim whose body was recovered.

And here's an interesting connection to the movies. The Platform Tavern is closely associated with a memorable scene from James Cameron's Titanic, in which Jack Dawson and his friend Fabrizio De Rossi win their tickets to America in a last-minute poker game. Although the actual scene wasn't filmed here, the pub is said to have inspired its setting.

Today, the Platform Tavern still retains much of its traditional charm, making it a pleasant place to enjoy a drink or a meal while discovering a little more about Southampton's maritime past.
