Plaza de Beneficencia (Charity Square), San Juan

Plaza de Beneficencia is a small public square surrounded by some of the historic district’s major cultural buildings. Its name recalls the nearby Asilo de Beneficencia, a 19th-century institution created for social assistance and education and now associated with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. The setting links the square with an area once dominated by military, charitable and public institutions.

The main feature is a 1998 monument to Eugenio María de Hostos, created by Puerto Rican sculptor José Buscaglia Guillermety. Hostos was an educator, writer, philosopher, sociologist and supporter of independence for Puerto Rico and Cuba. Often called the “Citizen of the Americas,” he promoted public education and social reform across the Caribbean and Latin America. Buscaglia’s sculpture presents Hostos together with figures of children, emphasizing his strong connection with teaching and younger generations.

Trees, stone steps and low walls give the plaza a quiet, compact character. Its position close to the former Ballajá Barracks and other cultural institutions makes it a useful stop for visitors exploring the surrounding historic quarter on foot. From this elevated part of the district, there are also views toward the old fortifications and nearby open spaces.
