Casa Rosa (The Pink House), San Juan

Casa Rosa, also known as Casa Rosada or the Pink House, is a small historic building beside the old defensive walls. Built in 1812, it originally served as barracks for Spanish soldiers assigned to the nearby San Agustín Bastion, linking the house directly with the military system that protected the fortified settlement.

In 1881, the Spanish Army converted the building into officers’ quarters. Its appearance contrasts with the heavy stone fortifications around it: the two-storey structure has a bright pink exterior, white trim, shuttered windows and an arched portico facing a garden with tropical vegetation. The decorative entrance gate marked “Casa Rosa” has also become a familiar detail for visitors and photographers.

After its military role ended, Casa Rosa was adapted for different civilian uses, including a museum devoted to Puerto Rican arts and crafts. It later became a day-care centre for children of government employees and is generally viewed from outside rather than visited as a museum. Its position beside the walls recalls the district’s everyday military life.
