Poortersloge (Burgher's Lodge), Bruges

The Burghers’ Lodge was constructed between 1395 and 1417. It was commissioned by Bruges’s prosperous burgesses, a privileged group that included wealthy merchants and members of the urban elite. They used the building to meet and entertain their foreign trading partners and could watch ships approaching from its slender tower. From 1417 until 1715, the Burghers’ Lodge was also the headquarters of the Society of the White Bear, a prestigious chivalric association that organized jousting tournaments in Bruges. This connection is commemorated by a small sculpture known as the Bear of the Loggia, located in a niche on the façade.

A fire damaged the building in 1755, after which it was repaired and given a new entrance and tower crown. A Latin inscription on the entrance cartouche commemorates its recovery from the fire. The structure underwent further alterations during the 18th and 19th centuries, and its present late-medieval appearance is largely the result of a historicizing restoration directed by Bruges city architect Louis Delacenserie around 1900.

Between 1720 and 1890, the building housed the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts. Following the French Revolution, the academy also sheltered artworks rescued from demolished churches, including paintings by the Flemish Primitives. In 1912, the Burghers’ Lodge and several adjoining buildings were adapted for use by the Belgian State Archives, which remained there for approximately a century before moving to a larger facility. Today, the Burghers’ Lodge serves as a venue for contemporary art, hosting themed exhibitions, private collections, and solo presentations.
