Porta San Donato (St. Donatus Gate), Bologna

Porta San Donato (St. Donatus Gate), Bologna

As you stroll along the circular boulevard encircling the Old City, you'll encounter several gates that have been preserved from the ancient walls that once fortified Bologna for centuries. Among these historic gates, Porta San Donato stands out as one of the most picturesque.

Belonging to the third and final circle of Bologna's walls, it was originally erected in the 13th century to safeguard the route to the valleys of Argenta and Ferrara. Over time, it underwent modifications, retaining its original forepart or "rivellino" from the 15th century.

Constructed of brick, the gate was once part of a larger complex that included quarters for guards. In 1354, a drawbridge was added over the moat for additional security. While the gate was closed and sealed off in 1428 as a precautionary measure, it was eventually reopened several decades later.

Tip:
Consider renting a bike to fully explore the entirety of the city center's circular route.
