Powel House, Philadelphia

The Powel House, situated in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, is a remarkable historic mansion that encapsulates a significant period of American history. Constructed in 1765, this Georgian brick mansion was originally the residence of Charles Stedman, a merchant and shipmaster. In the early 20th century, the mansion experienced a shift in purpose, being utilized as a warehouse and office for a business specializing in the import and export of Russian and Siberian horse hair and bristles. During this time, a significant portion of its interior architectural details was sold to prestigious institutions, namely the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

However, a revival of the Powel House occurred thanks to the efforts of the historical society and individuals like Wister. They dedicated a decade to restoring the house to its original glory, focusing on the period of Samuel Powel's residency. Samuel Powel, a notable figure of the time, was known as the "Patriot Mayor" of Philadelphia and a friend of several founding fathers. The restoration aimed to reflect the lifestyle and aesthetic of affluent Philadelphians during the American Revolution.

Presently, the Powel House stands as a testament to its rich history and cultural significance. Visitors can admire its decorative arts collection, which includes portraits of the Powel and Willing families, who were prominent figures in Colonial Philadelphia. Additionally, the house features a formal, walled garden that is characteristic of the colonial era, offering a glimpse into the architectural and horticultural practices of the period.
