Praça Quinze, Rio de Janeiro

Praça Quinze, Rio de Janeiro

Quinze de Novembro Square, commonly known as Quinze Square, can be found on First of March Street and is a part of Orla Conde, a public waterfront promenade along Guanabara Bay.

This square has a rich history dating back to the 16th century and underwent a rejuvenation process, reopening on May 29, 2016. The revitalization project was undertaken during Mayor Eduardo Paes' administration as part of Porto Maravilha, an urban initiative aimed at revitalizing the Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

In the immediate vicinity, you'll discover various historically and politically significant landmarks, including the Paço Imperial and Palácio Tiradentes. Additionally, Quinze Square boasts four notable historical monuments: the Chafariz do Mestre Valentim (Fountain of Master Valentim), the Equestrian Statue of Dom João VI, the Equestrian Statue of General Osório, and the Statue of the Black Admiral.

In contemporary times, Quinze Square holds a special place in the heart of Rio de Janeiro's skateboarding community. On November 8, 2016, an official ordinance authorized skateboarding in Praça XV and Praça Marechal Âncora at any time, making it a hub for skateboarders.

The square derives its name from November 15, 1889, a significant date in Brazilian history when the Republic of Brazil was proclaimed. This marked the establishment of a presidential federative republic, replacing the parliamentary constitutional monarchy that had been in place since 1822.
