Praia de Sao Rafael (Sao Rafael Beach), Albufeira

Sao Rafael Beach is a striking beach nestled on the southern Atlantic coast of the Algarve, just west of Albufeira. Located near the resort village of Sesmarias, it stands out for its distinctive ocher limestone cliffs, soft golden sand, and clear turquoise waters. Recognized as a Blue Flag beach, Sao Rafael offers a mix of natural beauty and accessible infrastructure, including boardwalks, paved slopes, and dedicated parking for disabled visitors. The beach is backed by weathered rock formations with whimsical names like the Swallow’s Nest and Small Bridge, creating small coves and shaded nooks ideal for quieter moments away from the main crowd.

In the peak summer season, the main stretch of Sao Rafael can fill quickly with sunbathers and families, many of whom stay at nearby hotels. A ramp and staircase lead visitors from the cliff-top car park down to the beach, where they can rent sun loungers, parasols, pedalos, or simply enjoy the free area. Lifeguards are present during the bathing season, and the gentle waters are typically calm enough for swimming and snorkeling. At low tide, it’s possible to walk westward around the rocks and discover small grottoes and sea caves, adding a sense of adventure to the experience.
