Praia do Castelo (Castle Beach), Albufeira

Praia do Castelo (Castle Beach), Albufeira

Castle Beach is a tucked-away gem on the Algarve coast, just west of Albufeira’s old town. Surrounded by high, rugged cliffs and flanked by pine trees, the beach is named after a jagged rock formation at its eastern tip that resembles castle battlements. Others say its name comes from a 16th-century watchtower, built to defend the coast from Barbary pirate raids-its remains still visible near the access point. Either way, there’s a story in the stonework, and a sense of quiet seclusion that makes this beach a local favorite.

The beach itself is small-only about 200 meters long-but feels spacious thanks to its scattered coves and hidden inlets carved by erosion. The cliffs not only provide shelter from the wind but also create dramatic backdrops for sunbathing and photography. The sand is soft and golden, and the water is typically calm, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors often explore the rock formations at low tide, uncovering sinkholes, sea caves, and tide pools. Caution is advised near the cliffs, though, as erosion makes falling rocks a hazard.

From a small cliff-top car park in the village of Sesmarias, a wooden staircase leads down to the beach, where there’s a summer-season beach bar and restaurant with coastal views. Facilities include lifeguards, toilets, showers, rentable loungers, and parasols. While access isn’t suitable for those with limited mobility, the peaceful setting and natural beauty make it a rewarding stop for anyone able to navigate the steps.

A Blue Flag designation ensures clean water and quality services, and despite its growing popularity, Castle Beach remains one of Albufeira’s more tranquil options.
