Praia dos Arrifes (Arrifes Beach), Albufeira

Arrifes Beach, also known locally as Praia dos Tres Penecos (Beach of the Three Rocks), is a compact yet striking cove nestled along the southern Atlantic coast of the Algarve, near the village resort of Sesmarias. Situated just under 4 kilometers west of Albufeira’s old town, it forms part of the region’s prestigious Blue Flag beaches, celebrated for their clean waters and high standards. The beach is framed by low, rugged cliffs and three towering rock formations that rise dramatically from the sea, lending the beach its nickname. These formations, sculpted by centuries of erosion, are capped with hardy salt-resistant plants such as wormleaf saltwort and rock samphire.

Visitors descend a set of wooden stairs to reach the golden sands, which are soft underfoot and often bathed in clear, turquoise waters. Though not ideal for swimming due to hidden underwater rocks, the beach is a favorite for snorkeling, paddleboarding, and exploring at low tide, when tide pools and rocky outcrops become accessible. A smaller adjoining beach to the east reveals even more geological features, including fossilized bedrock and eroded coves, adding to the site’s photogenic appeal.

The beach remains relatively quiet compared to larger stretches nearby, making it a sought-after retreat for those wanting peace and scenery. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months when parasols and loungers can also be rented. At the rear of the beach, a seasonal seafood restaurant offers fresh fish and sweeping views of the sea. While parking is available, access can be challenging during peak months, and caution is advised near the cliff base due to occasional rockfalls.
