President House of Pakistan, Islamabad

President House of Pakistan, Islamabad (must see)

The President House of Pakistan, or Aiwan-e-Sadr, is the official residence and workplace of the head of state. It is closely linked with the country’s constitutional, ceremonial, and diplomatic life. Construction began in 1970, but political changes and administrative delays meant the complex took about 11 years to complete. Although it was inaugurated by President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, he chose not to live there, and Ghulam Ishaq Khan became the first president to use it as an official residence in 1988.

The building is known for its modern step-pyramid form, marked by clean geometry and pale exterior tones. Inside, it features red textiles, gold detailing, carved woodwork, and large crystal chandeliers. Its main ceremonial spaces include Jinnah Hall, Liaquat Hall, Johar Hall, and Nishtar Hall, named after key figures from Pakistan’s founding era.

The guarded grounds add another layer of interest. The complex has included a private menagerie with native and regional species such as chinkara deer, urial, pheasants, and grey parrots. It also has presidential stables, linked to the use of a traditional horse-drawn carriage during major national ceremonies. These features show how the residence combines official administration, ceremonial tradition, and carefully maintained private grounds.

In recent years, Aiwan-e-Sadr has also gained attention for its environmental upgrades. In October 2021, it received ISO 50001 certification and became known as the first presidential residence in the world to operate fully on green energy, supported by its own 1-megawatt solar power system. Tourists usually view the complex from outside, as access and photography are restricted. It is of interest for its political role, formal design, ceremonial traditions, and green-energy upgrades.
