Prime Minister's Secretariat, Islamabad (must see)
The Prime Minister’s Secretariat, officially referred to since 2013 as the Prime Minister’s Office, is one of Pakistan’s most important executive government complexes. The name change highlighted its role as an active center of decision-making rather than only an administrative secretariat. It is where the prime minister’s official work is coordinated, including policy review, cabinet matters, high-level meetings, and communication with other state institutions.
The building forms part of the planned federal government district shaped under the wider master plan associated with Greek planner Constantinos Apostolou Doxiadis. Its setting was designed to connect major state buildings with open space, controlled movement, and views toward the Margalla Hills. The roofline and stepped massing relate visually to the surrounding hills, giving the complex a strong relationship with the natural backdrop.
Architecturally, the building is known for its pale pink and white exterior, arched forms, small domed elements, and castle-like outline. At night, perimeter lighting gives the structure a softer and more ceremonial appearance. Inside, its formal rooms include spaces used for cabinet meetings, official briefings, and state-level discussions, with woodwork, polished surfaces, and decorative detailing used to project authority and national prestige.
Public access is restricted because the complex remains an active executive and security site. Tourists usually view it from approved exterior areas as part of the wider civic landscape. Its importance comes not only from its architecture, but also from its role in Pakistan’s parliamentary system, where key government decisions, official consultations, and national policy coordination are linked to this building.
