QV.1, Perth

QV.1, Perth

QV.1 in Perth is a significant landmark in the city's skyline. Completed in 1991, this 40-storey modernist skyscraper stands at a height of 163 metres (535 feet), making it the fourth-tallest building in Perth, following Central Park, the BankWest Tower, and the yet-to-be-completed BHP Tower. Designed by the renowned architect Harry Seidler, QV.1 has garnered attention not only for its height but also for its innovative design and energy efficiency, earning numerous awards.

Seidler's architectural vision for QV.1 was to create a building that harmonized with its surroundings, especially when viewed from Parliament House. To achieve this, the tower presents a narrow profile towards that direction, minimizing its visual impact. Another core aspect of its design is its commitment to energy efficiency. The building incorporates passive design elements, including tinted double-glazed windows and a combination of horizontal and vertical sun shades.

Despite its accolades and the designer's intent to blend efficiency with aesthetics, QV.1 has faced criticism over its appearance, with some describing it as "Perth's most ugly building" and likening it to "a giant Lego block." However, Harry Seidler himself held the building in high regard, considering it "the best building he had ever built." This juxtaposition of views highlights the subjective nature of architectural appreciation and the building's impact on Perth's architectural discourse. QV.1 remains a testament to Seidler's innovative approach to design and sustainability in urban development.
