Reformed Evangelical Church, Vilnius
The Reformed Evangelical Church has a rich history dating back to the mid-16th century when the Protestant Church was established in Lithuania during John Calvin's lifetime in 1557. The church is located in a Neoclassical building constructed between 1830 and 1835, designed by Karolis Podčašinskis, one of the best local architects of his time.
However, the church's history has been marked by turbulent times. The Soviets closed down the church in 1953 and converted it into a cinema, a fate shared by many religious institutions during that period. The building's entrance steps once contained gravestones that were stolen from one of the city's former Jewish cemeteries, a sad reminder of the church's dark past.
Despite these challenges, the Reformed Evangelical Church continues to thrive today, with a congregation that is dedicated to spreading the teachings of the Reformation. The church's teachings emphasize the importance of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, and the congregation takes an active role in helping those in need in the community.

Užupis District Walking Tour
A tiny isolated area and a former suburb, which now forms part of the Old Town of Vilnius, the Uzupis district is often compared, for its bohemian and laissez-faire atmosphere, to Montmartre of Paris and Freetown Christiania of Copenhagen. Similarly to the latter, in 1997, the district declared itself an independent republic; the tongue-in-cheek constitution of the self-proclaimed “republic”,... view more
