MO Museum, Vilnius
The MO Museum in Vilnius is a modern and contemporary art museum that was founded by Lithuanian scientists and philanthropists Danguolė and Viktoras Butkus. Initially, the MO Museum functioned as an "art museum without walls" for nearly a decade, before opening its doors on October 18th, 2018, to visitors.
The MO Museum houses a collection of around 6,000 modern and contemporary pieces, including major Lithuanian artworks dating from the 1960s to the present day. The collection, recognized as being of "national significance," contains works of painting, graphic art, photography, video art, small sculptures, performance art, installation art, and more. The collection reflects a broad range of styles and ideas, showcasing the main processes and developments in Lithuanian art over the last 60 years.
The MO Museum building, designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, is a cultural gateway linking the past and the future. The building features a dramatic staircase connecting a plaza at street level with an open terrace, and the interior courtyard cuts through the entire building. The structure flows between its exterior and interior, between the public and the private.
The MO Museum is not just an archive, but a living space of discovery, where visitors can attend exhibitions, film screenings, educational activities, concerts, and events geared to all age groups. The museum aims to create an active community of "MOdernists" who support the idea of MO and want to help create a new kind of museum together. The MO Museum is open and accessible to everyone, and visitors can enjoy the museum experience beyond its exhibition halls, in its reading room, café, shop, sculpture garden, and terrace above the Old Town.
