Roger Williams Park, Providence

Roger Williams Park is a landscaped public park covering more than 435 acres. It began in 1871, when Betsey Williams donated 102 acres of farmland and woodland for public use. Landscape architect Horace Cleveland shaped the grounds with broad lawns, winding roads, wooded areas, and connected ponds, creating a public retreat from the industrial surroundings of the late 19th century.

The park includes several cultural and recreational attractions. Visitors can explore the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium, the Botanical Center, Roger Williams Park Zoo, and Carousel Village. Historic structures include the Clark Dalrymple Boathouse, the Casino, and the Temple to Music. Bridges, lakeside paths, playgrounds, tennis courts, and seasonal boat rentals offer further ways to enjoy the grounds.

Quieter areas include the Japanese Garden, created by the Works Progress Administration in 1936, and the Rose Garden, with formal planting beds and seasonal flowers. Mature trees, water views, public art, and picnic lawns make the park suitable for both short walks and longer visits. Entry to the main grounds is free, although individual attractions may have separate admission fees and opening schedules.
