All Saints' Memorial Church, Providence

All Saints' Memorial Church, Providence

All Saints' Memorial Church, located in Providence's Federal Hill neighborhood, is an intriguing combination of the Gothic and Tudor Revival architectural styles. Designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter, a nationally prominent post-Civil War American architect, the church was constructed between 1869 and 1872 as a tribute to The Rt. Rev. John Henshaw, the first Episcopal Bishop of Rhode Island.

The structure's exterior, built from brownstone, features a flat-topped tower-a design that, due to financial constraints, was less elaborate than originally planned. Despite this, the interior showcases slender bronzed columns, intricate butterwood carvings, and a richly decorated ceiling highlighted with red and gold accents. The stained-glass windows include original pieces by Henry E. Sharp of New York and later additions by English-trained artist Thomas W. Bladen, installed between 1897 and 1929.

In 1980, All Saints' Memorial Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural significance and historical importance. Today, the church continues to serve as an Episcopal congregation, welcoming worshippers and visitors.
