Roger Williams Park Zoo, Providence

Roger Williams Park Zoo opened in 1872 and is among the oldest zoos in the United States. It began as a small collection of animals displayed for public entertainment, but later developed into a center for wildlife care, conservation and environmental education. In 1986, it became the first zoo in New England accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Mature trees and shaded paths give much of the site a park-like setting.

Visitors can explore several geographic and ecological zones. The Savanna presents African elephants, giraffes, zebras and other grassland animals, while Himalayan Trek features moon bears, red pandas, takin and snow leopards. Faces of the Rainforest recreates an Amazon environment with tropical plants, a free-flight aviary, scarlet ibis, howler monkeys and an anaconda. Interpretive displays examine animal behavior, habitats and conservation needs.

Wild Woodlands focuses on North American species, including bison, red wolves, bald eagles, copperheads and timber rattlesnakes. Families can also visit the farmyard, explore nature-play areas and use the Nature Swap, where collected shells, leaves, rocks or pine cones may be exchanged. Part of every general admission ticket supports conservation projects involving pollinators, turtles and other threatened wildlife.
