White Electric Coffee, Providence

White Electric Coffee is a long-running independent café known for its relaxed atmosphere and strong community ties. Established in 2000, it took its name from a painted “White Electric” sign left on the building by an earlier electrical repair business. The retained name gives the café a connection to the site’s commercial past.

The business entered a new chapter after its staff unionized in 2020. When the former owners decided to sell, the employees raised funds to purchase the café and reopened it as a worker-owned cooperative in 2021. Its workers now participate in decisions about daily operations, employment practices, and the future direction of the business.

Visitors can choose from coffee, espresso drinks, loose-leaf teas, and rotating specialty beverages. The food menu includes bagels, pastries, breakfast items, sandwiches, and salads, with several vegan and gluten-free choices. Indoor tables provide space for conversation, reading, or laptop work, while outdoor seating is available in suitable weather. The entrance is wheelchair accessible, and the informal setting attracts a varied mix of residents, students, artists, and travellers.
