Rua do Lavradio, Rio de Janeiro

Rua do Lavradio, Rio de Janeiro

Lavradio Street (Rua do Lavradio) is a prominent thoroughfare located in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. It stretches from Rua do Riachuelo to Rua Visconde do Rio Branco and holds a significant place in the historic heart of the city.

This district is renowned for its vibrant shopping scene, particularly for antique enthusiasts. It boasts a multitude of shops and markets specializing in a wide range of antiques spanning from the 17th to the 20th century. These treasures include furniture, ceramics, porcelain, sculptures, books, maps, paintings, fine art objects, and various home accessories. Notable antique stores like MeMo Mercado Moderno, Armazém 161 Antiguidades, and Emporia Dona Carlota offer a delightful selection of vintage lamps crafted from stained glass.

Furthermore, on weekends, outdoor markets come to life in this area, providing a haven for bargain hunters and collectors. These markets feature items such as stamps, coins, antique jewelry, furniture, and various home decor pieces.

Lavradio Street, dating back to 1771, was commissioned by the 2nd Marquis of Lavradio, Luis de Almeida Portugal Soares de Alarcão Eça e Melo Silva e Mascarenhas. He served as the Viceroy of Brazil from 1769 to 1779. Marquis of Lavradio chose this street to establish his residence at the corner of Rua da Recção. This residence became a hub for numerous parties and social gatherings, serving as a compensatory source of entertainment in the limited leisure options available in the colonial capital.

Today, the building that once belonged to the Marquis of Lavradio houses the Brazilian Society of Fine Arts, preserving its historical significance in Rio de Janeiro.
