Russian Submarine Museum, Hamburg

The Russian Submarine Museum in Hamburg showcases the B-515, a Tango-class submarine formerly operated by the Soviet and Russian Navies. This vessel, built in 1976 at the Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, served primarily in the Soviet Northern Fleet. It remained on active duty until April 2002. Over its service life, the B-515 was engaged in various missions including hunting, espionage, and patrol duties, manned by a crew of 78.

Post-decommissioning, the submarine was sold to investors for one million euros and transported to Hamburg at an additional cost of one million euros. Significant changes were required for its conversion into a museum piece, including the deactivation of major systems like engines and hydraulics. A six-centimeter thick rubber coating, designed to evade sonar detection, still covers the submarine.

The vessel's transformation into the Submarine Museum Hamburg involved extensive modifications to ensure accessibility for visitors. Large openings were cut into the bow and stern for entry and exit, and it was mandated that the submarine be towed to Hamburg as it was no longer permitted to travel under its power. Upon arrival, further modifications were made, rendering the submarine incapable of diving or independent operation.

Originally positioned in Hamburg's HafenCity, B-515 was relocated to a permanent position aground at Saint Pauli fish market near the jetties. Known to the public as U-434, based on its pennant number, the submarine offers visitors a glimpse into naval history and technology during low tide when its original propellers, dive planes, and rudder are visible. This museum not only serves as an educational exhibit but also as a vivid reminder of Cold War maritime strategies and the life of submariners.
