Saint Andrew's Church, Karachi

Saint Andrew’s Church, also known as the Scotch Church, is a historic Protestant church built for the Scottish Presbyterian community during the British colonial period. It is not a Roman Catholic church. Its foundation stone was laid in February 1867 by Sir Robert Napier, commander-in-chief of the Bombay Army, and construction was completed in 1868. Designed by railway engineer T. G. Newnham, it later became affiliated with the Church of Pakistan and remains an active place of worship.

The building is an example of Gothic Revival architecture, with pointed arches, buttresses, narrow openings, an octagonal entrance porch, and a tall tower rising approximately 135 feet. Its stone exterior, steep rooflines, and vertical proportions reflect the design of many 19th-century British churches. The interior follows a simple Protestant arrangement focused on the nave, pulpit, and communion area, rather than the statues and elaborate altar decorations commonly associated with Roman Catholic churches. For many decades, the church mainly served European residents, while Urdu-language services were introduced in 1969 for local Christians.

Today, congregational worship, weddings, baptisms, and Christmas and Easter services continue to take place there. The church is also protected under the Sindh Cultural Heritage (Preservation) Act, recognizing its architectural and historical importance. Visitors may admire its Gothic stonework and tower, but should remember that it remains a functioning religious building and arrange access around service times.
