Empress Market, Karachi (must see)

Empress Market is one of Karachi's oldest and most recognizable public markets, constructed between 1884 and 1889 during the British colonial period. It was built to commemorate the reign of Queen Victoria, who held the title of Empress of India, and was designed by municipal architect James Strachan in the Domestic Indo-Gothic style. For more than a century, the market has remained an important commercial center, serving generations of shoppers while reflecting the city's multicultural trading traditions.

Its historic role and continued daily activity have made it one of the city's best-known landmarks. The market is distinguished by its 140-foot clock tower, pointed arches, stone facades, and spacious galleries arranged around a central courtyard. Within the building, hundreds of shops and stalls sell fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, meat, seafood, tea, dry fruits, textiles, and everyday essentials. Following a major multi-phase restoration and urban renewal project completed in 2026, the historic landmark was extensively rehabilitated, its clock tower was reactivated, and the surrounding grounds were cleared of illegal encroachments to create a landscaped public park. The restoration preserved the building's historic appearance while improving the surrounding public space.

Beyond its role as a marketplace, Empress Market is an important part of Karachi's architectural and cultural heritage. The building has witnessed the city's transformation from a colonial port into a modern metropolis while remaining at the center of daily commercial life.
