Rainbow Centre, Karachi

Rainbow Centre is a multi-storey commercial complex historically known as a major market for recorded entertainment. Established around 1980, it became a leading destination for videocassettes and later CDs and DVDs containing films, television programs, music, computer software, and games. At its height, hundreds of shops operated in the building, attracting customers, performers, film distributors, and entertainment businesses from across Pakistan and becoming closely connected with the growth of home video.

Much of the center’s trade involved unauthorized copies, and it became associated with Pakistan’s video-piracy industry. During the VHS, CD, and DVD eras, retailers offered Pakistani and international films, television serials, stage plays, cartoons, music recordings, computer applications, and games for computers and consoles. Some businesses also provided disc copying, video conversion, software installation, and console-related services. A smaller number of shops continue to sell gaming consoles, accessories, computer products, and recorded media, although the center is no longer primarily a major destination for physical entertainment. The spread of high-speed internet, smartphones, streaming platforms, and digital downloads greatly reduced demand for physical media. By the late 2010s and early 2020s, many video shops had closed or changed their businesses. Sections of the complex became occupied by clothing merchants, dry-fruit sellers, food vendors, and other retailers.

Rainbow Centre remains significant for its connection with the rise and decline of Pakistan’s VHS, CD, and DVD trade, while its present mixture of gaming, electronics, media, clothing, food, and general retail reflects changing patterns of entertainment consumption.
