Saint Catherine's Church, Turku
Saint Catherine's Church, located in the Nummi district of Turku, is a remarkable medieval stone church with deep historical roots. The church, first mentioned in 1396, is thought to have replaced an earlier wooden structure dating back to 1351. The oldest part of the building is the sacristy, which survived the destruction caused by the German pirates known as the Victual Brothers, who looted and burned the original church.
Construction of the present stone church began in the early 15th century, and it reflects the Gothic architectural style typical of medieval Finnish churches. Dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the church has seen numerous restorations over the centuries, but it retains much of its original medieval design.
Originally known as Kaarina Church, it was renamed Saint Catherine’s Church in 1991 after Nummi was incorporated into Turku in 1939. Its long-standing history and beautiful architecture make it a key cultural landmark in Turku, seamlessly blending its medieval origins with the modern urban landscape.
