Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Dushanbe

Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Dushanbe

St. Nicholas Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox church and the seat of the Russian Orthodox Eparchy of Dushanbe and Tajikistan. It was built in 1943, during the Second World War, when Soviet authorities briefly eased restrictions on the Church to support believers.

By the early 2000s, the cathedral showed clear signs of long-term neglect. A major restoration carried out between 2005 and 2011 repaired the structure, roof, walls, and interior, allowing the church to continue operating safely. Since then, ongoing maintenance has helped keep the building in stable condition.

Today, the cathedral remains active but serves a much smaller Orthodox community than in the Soviet period. After the collapse of the USSR, much of the Russian population left the country, leaving only several hundred believers and a small number of churches. Even so, the cathedral continues to hold regular services and religious festivals.
