Saint Paul's Church, Bergen

Saint Paul's Church, located in Bergen, is a significant Roman Catholic edifice nestled at the intersection of Christies Street and Nygård Street. This church serves as a cornerstone of the Catholic community in Bergen. The Bergen Catholic parish, established in 1858, saw the construction of this church in 1876 after facing initial financial hurdles that delayed its building.

The architecture of Saint Paul’s Church is notably designed by an Italian Earl named Mella, featuring Norwegian stone and marble. Its interior is adorned with stained glass windows over the choir and a prominent crucifix over the altar, enhancing its spiritual ambiance. Despite the Reformation in 1537, which established the Evangelical-Lutheran faith as Norway’s official religion, Saint Paul's Church thrives as a hub for the Catholic faith, predominantly catering to immigrants, as the parish comprises members from over 120 nationalities.

The growth of the Catholic community in Bergen is reflected in the increasing number of believers, swelling from 4,044 in 2004 to over 12,000 by 2012. This burgeoning population has prompted the construction of additional Catholic churches, including Saint James's Church, to accommodate the community better. Notably, Saint Paul’s Church is part of the only Roman-Catholic parish in the Vestland region and falls under the Diocese of Oslo.

Adjacent to Saint Paul's Church is Saint Paul’s School, a Roman Catholic educational institution where 60% of the students are Catholics, further underscoring the church's pivotal role in local Catholic education and community life.
