Salisbury Playhouse, Salisbury

Salisbury Playhouse is a major producing theatre with a history that began in an unexpected way. In 1915, cinema entrepreneur Albany Ward bought a former Primitive Methodist Chapel, reportedly saying he intended to turn it into a garage. Instead, he turned it into a cinema, and during the Second World War it entertained nearby troops as an ENSA venue.

The present theatre opened on 30 November 1976, with Sir Alec Guinness officially marking the occasion. Today, it presents drama, comedy, musicals, family shows, and touring productions, while also creating much of its own work. Its on-site scenery workshop, wardrobe department, and paint shop allow sets, props, and costumes to be designed and made within the building.

The Playhouse also supports the wider community through youth theatre, workshops, talks, and creative learning programmes. Its café and bar provide a relaxed space before performances and during intervals. Looking ahead, the “Stage the Future” redevelopment aims to modernise the building, improve performance technology, expand public spaces, and support net-zero carbon goals.
