Sam Tung Uk Museum, Hong Kong

Sam Tung Uk Museum, Hong Kong

The Sam Tung Uk Museum stands as a restored testament to the history of Sam Tung Uk, a Hakka-walled village located in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. Originally constructed in 1786 during the Qing dynasty, this remarkable museum was built under the guidance of Chan Yam-shing, the patriarch of the Chan clan who hailed from Fujian, China. Having settled in Guangdong before finally arriving in Hong Kong to pursue farming, the Chan clan dedicated their efforts to erecting this village.

After its inhabitants vacated the premises in April 1980, Sam Tung Uk was recognized as a historic monument in March 1981. The Hong Kong government generously funded the restoration of this site, transforming it into a museum that opened its doors in 1987. The meticulous restoration work was honored with the prestigious Pacific Heritage Award from the Pacific Asia Tourist Association in 1990.

Today, the museum proudly preserves the entrance, assembly, and ancestral halls, along with twelve of the original houses. Certain rooms have been modified to serve as a reception area, an orientation room, an exhibition hall, a museum office, and a lecture theatre. Within its walls, visitors can explore the diverse array of agricultural tools and everyday objects that showcase the vibrant Hakka village life. Meanwhile, the main exhibition hall, located at the far end of the complex, periodically changes its displays, offering fresh insights and experiences every six months. Additionally, visitors can find documentation chronicling the restoration process in the Orientation Room, adding an informative element to their visit.
