San Agustin Museum - Intramuros, Manila (must see)

Located within the historic walled city of Intramuros, the San Agustin Museum offers an immersive journey through more than four centuries of Philippine religious, artistic, and colonial history. Housed in the former San Agustin Monastery, adjacent to the UNESCO-listed San Agustin Church, the museum occupies one of the oldest surviving stone buildings in the Philippines. While much of Intramuros was devastated during the Second World War, the monastery survived, preserving an extraordinary legacy of Spanish colonial architecture and culture.

The museum's galleries display an outstanding collection of religious art and historical treasures assembled by the Augustinian order. Visitors can admire colonial-era furniture, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, liturgical vestments, sacred vessels, carved ivory images, antique choir books, Chinese ceramics, and finely crafted church silver. These collections illustrate the cultural exchanges that shaped the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period.

Equally impressive is the monastery itself. Its elegant arcaded cloisters, peaceful courtyards, centuries-old stone walls, carved wooden ceilings, and former monastic rooms provide an atmospheric setting for the exhibits. The architecture is a reminder of the building's original purpose as a monastery and reflects the resilience of one of Manila's most significant historic structures, having withstood earthquakes, fires, and the destruction of war.
