San Giorgio, Siena

San Giorgio, Siena

San Giorgio Church in Siena stands as a monumental piece of religious and cultural history, originally built in 1260. This construction was to celebrate the victory of the Sienese soldiers, known as the Ghibellines, at the Battle of Montaperti. Notably, the church is dedicated to Saint George, reflecting the battle cry used by the soldiers during their historic conflict. The soldiers themselves funded the church's establishment, contributing a portion of their pay to its construction.

The church's architectural highlight is its Gothic Romanesque tower, crafted by Del Dugento. This tower is the sole survivor from the original medieval structure and features 38 windows, each symbolizing the companies of Ghibelline Knights who fought at Montaperti. Over the centuries, the church has undergone significant transformations, with the most extensive renovation carried out in 1738 under the direction of Pietro Cremoni. This reconstruction led to the church's current form.

The facade of San Giorgio Church is adorned with two large columns and bears the coat of arms of Cardinal Anton Felice Zondadari, who was instrumental in the 18th-century restoration. Inside, the church houses several significant art treasures, including a painting of the Crucifixion by Francesco Vanni and "Encounter of the Lord with his Mother on the Calvary" by his son, Rafaello Vanni. Additionally, the church contains the tomb of Francesco Vanni, designed by his sons Rafaello and Michaelangelo, positioned to the left of the main entrance. The transept of the church also holds two other tombs belonging to the Zondadari family, further emphasizing its historical and familial significance.
